Birthday Cards

December 30th, 2008

Hi everyone! Well school has started back up so that means birthday parties and in our family there is a hand-full of birthdays in Nov. as well, so I figured I’d start getting a jump start on my birthday cards. Of course, the kids always like to make their own cards for their friends, which I highly encourage. Emily is super excited because she has been invited to her first birthday party for a kindergarten classmate this Sat. She’s been counting down the days and just can’t wait. I think watching her brother go to birthday parties over the past couple of years has just made her more excited for the day she’d get to go to one. Too cute!!

The two cards I have today are made with all Stampin’ Up! products unless otherwise noted. The first is one I actually made a while ago that I had on my display board downstairs for my club members to see.

This one took some time, but I was really happy with how it came out and love the brightness of the colors. The stamp sets are: Doodle This, Print Pattern (retired), Warmest Regards. Cardstock: Whisper White, Tempting Turquoise, Gable Green. Ink: Basic Black and Versa Mark (on flower petals so I could use Black EP) and I used Stampin’ Write Markers. Embellishments: Dazzling Diamonds, Bold Bright Buttons, Tempting Turq. & Maize Grosgrain Ribbon. Here’s a close up of the flower:

I used Dimensionals to layer the flowers and make them "pop" off the card. With this card I even did the inside.

The next card uses a new stamp set to this year’s Stampin’ Up! catalog, Crazy for Cupcakes. I like this set because in my opinion there is no age limit on cupcake cards, they are perfect for everyone.

Cardstock: Wild Wasabi (retired), Real Red, Whisper White, East Coast Prep (retired). Ink: Memento Tuxedo Black . I colored in with my copic markers and SU! Basic Black bleeds because of the alcohol in the copics. The large scallop is by Sizzix, but is now offered through Stampin’ Up!. Stitching was done on my Janome sewing machine. Embellishments: Rich Regal beads.

As always thanks for stopping by and enjoy your day.

Card Sketch

December 30th, 2008

Hi Everyone. Quick post as I need to get the rest of our camping gear loaded before hubby gets home from work, then we are off for camping. It’s going to be a beautiful weekend here in NH!

The card I made for the sketch is using my Spooky Layering Collage by Outlines Rubber Stamp Co, Inc. and the sentiment is from Chills and Thrills Rub Ons by Stampin’ Up!

Img_3253_2

I colored the images in with my Copic Markers and added some sparkle with my Rangers Stickles in Golden Rod, Green and Christmas Red. This card sketch is a great way to use up those scraps you have. All cardstock is from SU! Whisper White, Lovely Lilac and Pumpkin Pie. Here’s the sketch:

I still cannot figure out how to make the sketch larger, but I think it works. Have fun with it and feel free to share what you come up with.

Well off to do some camping. Did I say how excited I am? Gosh I’m like a little kid. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the rest of your day.

Always check the paper first when sending out cards…

December 30th, 2008

Been a trying week. They laid off a co-worker in my department because of cutbacks and the economy, and today is the 13-year anniversary of my mother dying from colon cancer.

So to cheer myself up, I’m reposting this blog post from 3 years ago when I made the biggest goof I’ve ever made when sending out Christmas cards. Uncle Ed died a couple of months after I sent the card, but I’ve always wondered if I made him smile.

Dear Uncle Ed,

I’m so sorry for the goof.

OMG, honestly, I never meant to send you a Christmas letter printed on the back of the erotic romance story I was writing.

It was dark in the office, I was tired, and thought I had loaded the printer with fresh, clean paper. Not the scrap paper from one of my current works in progress.

I had NO idea what I had sent you until I just looked now at the back of the Christmas letters and saw this printed on it:

“Because he found himself wanting, very badly, to have sex with her. To restore that sparkling fire in her eyes he’d seen earlier. To hear that throaty laughter turn into deep moans of passion as he thrust slowly into her wet heat…

“Yes, I’m afraid it’s true, to answer the question probably spinning about in your mind. Your good little niece who works tirelessly for the poor and went to Sunday School and memorized prayers to the saints writes erotic romance. Yup. Steaming hot sex.

My secret is out. I hope you are doing okay and I didn’t give you a heart attack. Give my best to everyone.

Love, Bonnie

Mariah Carey Hires Herself

Mariah Carey Pictures, Images and Photos

Mariah Carey is her own replacement.

E! News has exclusively confirmed that the Grammy winner has found a different role for longtime talent manager Benny Medina and will now be representing herself.
Carey and Medina, who have worked together for more than five years, both say that they will continue to collaborate: Medina’s Handprint Entertainment will continue to develop content for, and with, the singer, but Carey’s own Maroon Entertainment will be managing her career.
Initial reports from outlets such as the New York Post’s Page Six and the New York Daily News said Tuesday that Carey, 38, had dumped Medina, possibly Medina had been “courting” his former client (and reported Carey rival) Jennifer Lopez.

arugula, carrot and celery root salad

December 30th, 2008

arugla, carrot and celery root salad

for those who procastinate (like moi) and are still looking for a salad for tomorrow …. here’s a perfect choice!

fine cooking’s original recipe said it could serve 10-12 …. i halved the recipe and we still ate it all accompanied to a main meal. then again, i’m someone who could eat a big salad for dinner and be happy, but i could imagine even you carnivores would go for seconds with this one!

super easy to make, and the spiciness of the arugula would probably go great with all the sweetness of traditional thanksgiving fare.

every thanksgiving is special to me. but as i get ready to temporarily leave my family and friends for half a year, i’m going to be giving a lot of thanks this thursday. i hope you’ll be celebrating with loved ones as well.

arugula, carrot and celery root salad: serves 2-4
adapted from fine cooking (jan 2009, p. 58)

2 tb apple cider vinegar
2 tb honey
1 tsp dijon mustard
3-4 tb olive oil
salt + pepper
3 medium carrots
1 small celery root
3 oz baby arugula
1/2 cup sliced almonds, toasted
1/2 cup dried cranberries

1. make vinaigrette: in small bowl, whisk together vinegar, honey, and mustard. whisk in oil and season with salt and pepper. this makes the whole batch of vinaigrette from the original recipe but you’ll only use half for this serving size. serve with extra vinaigrette on the side, or save for another time.

2. wash and dry the arugula. peel and trim carrots and celery root, and grate into strips (great the celery root right before serving, as it may oxidize and turn brown if done too much earlier).

3. toss together the arugula, carrots, celery root, and half the almonds and cranberries with half the vinaigrette. season with salt and pepper to taste. sprinkle the rest of the almonds and cranberries on top.

So here’s the first sign it’s a scam. Who sent the mail? According to the from address it’s some random person with an address at starhub.net.sg, which is a telecommunications company in Singapore. Note how the sender’s address has nothing to do with the company they’re claiming to represent. Then they tell you to respond not to them, but to an address at a free mail service. In this case, it’s Google’s gmail. Other times it might be Hotmail or Yahoo! mail. The address at a domain that has nothing to do with the business, then replying to an address at a free mail service is almost always a sure sign of a scam.

Second, when I looked at the message headers (the underlying routing information) I found it actually originated from “user-0cevbp7.cable.mindspring.com”. Mindspring is a subsidiary of Earthlink, right here in the old U.S. of A, not Singapore. That means it most likely got sent from the zombified computer of someone who clicked an attachment to see naked pictures of Margaret Thatcher or fell for some other trick to voluntarily load a virus onto his computer..

Third, package forwarding is an old scam. Crooks buy stuff on EBay with compromised Paypal accounts or forged checks. No U.S. seller is going to send the stuff to Nigeria or China or Russia, because they know that most buyers from those countries are scammers. So they have the package shipped to you and have you ship it to them in Nigeria, China, or Russia. When the check bounces or Paypal reverses the payment, the seller goes to the cops and the cops come knocking on your door. Best of all, you’re now an accessory to a felony.

Now we come to the compensation. How long does it take you to accept a delivery, take it to the UPS store, and ship it to the address they e-mailed you? 30 minutes? An hour? Who’s going to pay you $70-140 an hour for work that generally pays $10-20 an hour? If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I know you may be feeling desperate and wishing this was true. Heck, my wife had a baby this week and I’m between contracts. With the way the economy’s going, I’m scared. So I know how you might be feeling. But this stinks like a month old fish. Don’t reply. Don’t get yourself on the radar of these criminals. Be glad you were smart enough to Google this and move on to better uses of your time.

Best of luck to you.

Bedtime Music: Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better

December 30th, 2008

The last Bond theme song this week is my favorite: Carly Simon singing Nobody Does It Better from the movie The Spy Who Loved Me. (This is my favorite Roger Moore movie as well.) Written by Marvin Hamlisch, with lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager, I remember hearing once that the song was written via a trans-continental conference call.

Nobody Does It Better was and still is an immensely popular song. The song reached #2 on the U.S. singles chart and #1 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart, and was ranked the 67th greatest song by the American Film Institute for its listing in the top 100 songs in American cinema. For Bond movies, the only other song on the list is Goldfinger, which is ranked 53rd.

The heat in Max Butler’s safe house was nearly unbearable. It was the equipment’s fault. Butler had crammed several servers and laptops into the studio apartment high above San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, and the mass of processors and displays produced a swelter that pulsed through the room.
